CM05 Chiang Mai Neighbour – Mae Hong Son City ( 9.5 hours )

09:00 am             Leave from the Hotel.

10:00 am             Depart from Chiang Mai by airplane for a 35 minutes flight to Mae Hong Son.

11:00 am              Visit a long-neck Karen hilltribe village. They are members of the tiny 

                               Padaung Tribe of Burma who came to Thailand by long-tail boat on the Pai River to escape government repression at Nam Phiang Din Village. The origin of the ring wearing ritual remains unclear, despite an  embarrassment of plausible explanations. According to Padaung legend,  the mother of their tribe was a dragon with a long beautiful neck and that their unique custom is an imitation of her. Some people claim that ring-wearing arose out of a need to protect women from tiger attack.

01:00 pm             Enjoy lunch at a Thai restaurant.

02:00 pm             Explore the magnificent “Burmese” style temple, Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu, high on a hilltop. Doi Kong Mu is the name of the hill that dominates Mae Hong Son, often covered with the mist in the morning. There are a number of Buddha  images and two chedis, one built on 1860 and the second in 1874. The mist clears in the afternoon giving a spectacular panoramic view of the valley and the surrounding mountains. This wonderful experience is enhanced by the sound of miniature brass bells hanging from the top of the chedis.

                            Then visit Wat Chong Kham and Wat Chong Klang. These are two “Burmese” style temples in the same compound, picturesquely situated beside a small lake. Wat Chong Kham was built nearly 200 years ago. If features a large intricately carved sermon throne decorated with the Dharmchakra (Wheel of Law) in coloured gold mosaic. Wat Chong Khang houses 100-years-old mosaic Vessantara Jataka (story of the Buddha’s previons lives), brought from Burma in 1875.

05:05 pm             Depart from Mae Hong Son.

05:40 pm             Arrive at Chiang Mai International Airport.

06:30 pm             Arrive back at the Hotel
